Might Be A Good Idea...

As you probably know, I'm not one to pay much attention to the hype on modern cards and their exorbitant prices.  The stars today don't quite have the mystique or reverance to me that vintage guys do.  Which is not to say that there aren't a few players that will be in the record books and lore for a long time to come.

Every once in a while I have to acknowledge that as it manifests itself in cards.

So a couple months ago, I went into my collection...

It's down here somewhere...

Of course it's on the bottom...

Writing on the corner of a box is rather difficult.  My handwriting is better than this.  But anyway...

OK, pull that one out...

Series 1 on the left,... Series 2 next,...hmm don't have wrappers for Update.  Oh well...

Ah, bonus SP Ruth!  OK, should be about right here...

Pull that chunk out...

Right about here...

There he is!

That's a little better, considering...

Figured I shouldn't leave him in there with the set for much longer.  I could put him in one of those big lucite holders with the four screws like I have all my other big money cards.  (I know, no one uses those any more.)

Anybody else I might be neglecting in my sets for the last decade or so who is now over $50?

  1. I did the same for my 2011 Update Trout but I think it was around 2016 ... 2011 is filled with cards now going for $.

    1. Night Owl's post was what made me go back and check and find out I have one. Glad I did. Crazy how much that card goes for. Considering that he looks like he's going to end his career hurt much of the time, and if he stays with the Angels he's not going to get much opportunity for postseason heroics, his card is unlikely to stay at this range for a lot onger. I think ultimately his rookie cards will settle down to wherever Pujols's go. People were spending $1,000 for his rookie card thinking he might set every record. Now he's going to be "merely" a solid HOFer.

  2. Nice find with the Trout rookie. Depending on the years you have I think you might be able to find an Altuve rookie in 2011, Betts in 2014 Update, deGrom in 2014, Stanton in 2010, Posey in 2010, Kershaw and Scherzer in 2008 among other ones. Good luck going through everything.

  3. Oh my! Great card for sure. Sure wish I had gotten back into collecting about 6 months prior and I might have pulled one of these. Or maybe not. But that thought is great. No secret big cards hiding in my boxes...that i know of...

  4. Unfortunately no Trout rookie for me, didn't buy enough Update that year for some reason. Good decision to protect it though, and yes, go find that Betts and Stanton, maybe lock up a Judge and Ohtani too.

  5. Don't lose sight of the Goldschmidt RC in that set as well. With the season he's having looks like he'll finally get his MVP. Was in the running for Triple Crown as well. He's on a HOF track too.

  6. It's hard for me to imagine anyone paying that much for a modern base card, no matter who's on it.
