Blog Bat Around: Current Collection Projects

Being the #1 leading blogger that he is, Night Owl was the first to pen a post on all his current collecting projects, or all the different sets, players, teams, sports, non-sports, and oddballs he is working on these days.  Several commenters, including myself suggested it become the next Blog Bat Around topic.

I might end up feeling like the guy trying to start the wave in the Geico commercial, but I went ahead and wrote out mine...

So here is everything I have in progress.  This may take a while.  In semi-chronological order by sport, sort of....

1960 Topps baseball

After finishing 1959 Topps in late 2015, I started in earnest on 1960.   My main man Marv has hooked me up with most of the latter part of the set, and now I'm down to the big guns.  McCovey RC, Mantle, and Snider are my last three.  Might be down to the Mick shortly.

1970 and 1972 Topps baseball

I've been striving to finish these two for a couple years.  The last few just seem to elude me.  And I'm not even trying to build minty fresh examples of either set.  They started with VG-ish bulk lots, so I can go with cheaper high numbers when I find them.  But they've lingered on the want list thru a couple Nationals now.  I gotta get 'em killed off this year.

1964 Topps baseball

'64 is going to be the primary vintage build after '60, '70 and '72 are all done.  I've started it officially this past summer, but there's still plenty to go.  Haven't cut down many of the stars yet.  And the majority of what I have so far is above #400.

1950 Bowman

These started out as a lot I bought from a neighbor of a good friend.  Haven't paid nearly as much for the rest of the singles I've obtained since then.  These are cheaper than I thought!  Even in Just-Over-Mediocre condition like I've been getting.  Only have one or two big stars so far though.

1963 Fleer

Been picking these up at shows for about a year or so.  Always liked them, but hadn't started shopping really hard for them until recently, so I always thought they were cool but unaffordable.  Starting to cure that impression.

Craploads of other set builds

There are whole pages dedicated to my set wants for baseball, football, and hockey, plus one for golf, basketball, and non-sports.  I'm always trading and scouring dealer boxes for hits to anything on my lists.  Some entries I'll break out in detail here.

T205 New York Giants Team Set

The picture at the top of my wants page for this collection is the inspiration for it.  Until a few years ago, I never thought I would own the real cards from the early 1900's, but now I'm down to seven.  I just joined the Net54 forum and discovered a lot more collectors who deal in this time period than I was aware of.  Hopefully they can help me knock these out and upgrade the few that aren't graded.  This is the only instance where I actually want graded cards.

Player Collections

I have 50+ baseball player collections that started back when I began collecting and had a couple cards of the same guy.  I thought "He's cool, I like him" and started collecting everything.  That multiplied over the years (and actually reduced a time or two as well).  Now there are several guys I like to collect a lot and some that are just there.  But at just about every show and dealer I visit, I find some oddball something that goes in one or more of these collections.

The main ones are guys that I have some connection or attachment to, whether it be fantasy football championships, watching them play in my home town and then their big-league debut, players who are favorites or relatives of friends of mine, or just guys that have some cool cards.  Most of them aren't HOF'ers, but are more the fan favorite types who hit a couple All-Star games here and there. The modern guys are tougher in that they have 10x more cards issued than the vintage guys.  They get binders for two at a time vs. the dozen plus that fit in there of vintage dudes.

Moon & Space

I've always been fascinated with the space program, especially the first few years when we landed on the moon.  Managed to pick up a couple sets of astronauts and space themed cards here and there.  A few are Heritage inserts, etc. and a couple complete sets.  Nice little non-sport project.

Washington Redskins

if I didn't have a good reference to go by, my Redskins team collection would be a lot harder to manage.  I found someone on eBay who had compiled team checklists before there was TeamSets4U or the Trading Card Database.  I bought the book, which was hundreds of pages of two-column, micro-sized font listings of every Redskins card issued.  There were a few updates, and then it stopped in 2008.  I then turned to the old fashioned Word doc Have List at that point.  Luckily there aren't as many football products as there once were, so it's reasonably manageable.

I just made a "quick list" to make hunting them much easier.  It's one thing to have the reference, but to have to flip back and forth through 100 pages to check every card in a mixed box is a big pain and discourages me from filling in the holes.  Now I can.

I've done well to find a lot of the early 'Skins for low prices, so aside from some Sammy Baughs, I'm pretty close to most of the old stuff.  I keep all of the old ones in a binder, then after the late 80's, they go in the old school storage lockers, which make it easy to separate by company and year.  The whole top shelf of the black wire rack is the Redskins lockers.

Errors & Variations

As part of several set builds, I love finding the variations too.  Everything from '81 Donruss to Pro Set football and hockey, back to 1959 Topps and some through the 60's, and on down to the occasional modern goofs like the "non-auto" 2007 Bowman Heritage.  I don't get all the legend variations from Topps flagship or anything like that, but I have spent many hours squinting at the fine lines between the stats on the back of Pro Set cards and junk wax.  I actually found the Whiten above for a dime.

Etc.

And the list goes on...

I Should Set A $30 Limit Too...

But I'd be done for the year already if I did.  This is what happens when you live cheap and have no life otherwise.  But I digress.

Robert over at $30 A Week Habit sent me some pretty diverse list hits.

Started out with some 2005 Heritage...

And some 2011, the latest one to grace my want lists...

And a couple nice 2013 Allen & Ginter inserts...

Then moved on to hockey, and the current O-Pee-Chee set.  Always glad to trade for hockey singles.  They're kinda scarce around here, even at shows.  Base cards first...

The team checklists and dreaded rookie...

And those cool playing card inserts...

Great trade, Robert!  Thanks!

Birthday Beauties: Milana Vayntrub

In order to keep this from becoming the Babes & Ballcards blog,  I discontinued the Birthday Beauties series even though it's a quick way to increase worldwide traffic.  But when I saw what today was, I couldn't resist.

Born in 1987 in Uzbekistan, Milana is most recognized for portraying Lily Adams in several popular AT&T commercials. She is also famous for her LivePrudeGirls YouTube channel and for her role in the CollegeHumor Originals web series.  Look up Bitchy Resting Face on YouTube.

She's the poster child for "face of an angel and a body for sin".

She's an interesting character too.  She's done some offbeat media things, and is involved in some charitable causes.  There are interviews with her online that reveal her quirky character and shameless sense of humor.

All I can say is Wow.  Happy Birthday Milana.

2003 Upper Deck Baseball - Two Boxes of S1 & S2

Have had a chunk of 2003 Upper Deck for a while, and even got the Update set.  Found a nice deal on boxes of both series, so I pulled the trigger.  Also got '96 Silver football, but didn't take pictures when I opened that.

Opened them in order - Series 1 first, then Series 2.  Base cards were fine, and thankfully were not stuck together like the Topps boxes I got a while back.  Hits got better as I went.  Inserts however went the opposite direction....

Box 1 Series 1

Here's a typical (non-insert) pack.  Lots of good names in this set.  Kinda neat to get Sammy and Bonds back to back.  Nomar and Beltre round out the star power.  Nice clean looking set too.

Only got six inserts out of each box.  They're nice looking, but I can see why I know a bunch of collectors with lots of Upper Deck inserts on their want lists forever.

And the hits...

Forgot that the Team USA stuff was a major part of this year.  Or maybe I never really knew.  Had just come back into collecting in late 2003, so I don't know much about it.  At least these guys had major league careers.  Not real encouraging, since they're an All-Star warmup jersey and Team USA swatch.  And the Floyd is weird because he's listed on the Red Sox, but represented the Marlins in the ASG.  So why did they list him that way?

Anyway, all the other packs had what I affectionately refer to as Big Fat Dummy Cards.  Which I'm actually glad to get because they make excellent padding for each end of a set in a box.

This is the stack of base cards from one box.

Box 2 Series 1.  I won't repeat the base, just the hits and inserts.

Aubrey is slightly familiar, but the least notable of the hits from any of these boxes.  Was really glad for the Mussina, since he's a PC, even though I only collect him on the Orioles.  This one's a keeper.

Then the inserts...

Could have cropped this first, I guess.  But anyway.  I saw Tejada and said "Here we go..."  Fifteen different cards in the set and I get a dupe.  But OK, I guess it's not as bad as if there were 50 or 100 of them like now.  But...

Even worse with these.  A-Rod AND Berkman twice.  Again, only 15 in the set.  Shouldn't these be consecutive boxes, or close?  You would think they would mix it up a little better.

So I sorted the base (after opening all four boxes), and still need quite a few singles.  37 to be exact.  I'll put the list at the end (and on my site).  Can't say I got the exact same two boxes, but it's not far off.  I've had worse.  But let's continue....

Box 1 Series 2

Series 2 starts at #271.  Different inserts this time.  Not bad looking.  And hey, I got a Jeter!

Happy with the hits, too.  Javy is cool and a blue swatch, and Oswalt is a major name, even for Team USA.

Not only are there Big Fat Dummy Cards in each pack, but also an ad slip for a contest.

And each box of Series 2 comes with a checklist flyer on top.   Guess they didn't think of it until halfway through set production or something.

Box 2 Series 2

OK, so far so good.  Don't have to worry about Matsui RC, even though it's only listed at about $4 or so.  So finally...

GOLD version LGonz (/100) and Philip Humber USA grey swatch.  Cool!  The Gold LGonz should be tradeable for sure.

But here's where I get annoyed.

Is there an echo in here?  Eighteen possible Sluggers and twelve Masters with the Leather, and I get THE IDENTICAL SIX CARDS FROM BOTH BOXES!!!!  Not one or two dupes, but every G&($#@_+# F#$*(@ one of them!  Dammit that's annoying.  The only upside is that hopefull this happens to everyone else too and they've got extras to trade for mine.  I didn't expect this from Upper Deck.

There was some redemption in the end, though.  Series 2 boxes advertise these Hobby Box exclusive etched wood Magical Performances cards (1:96) over and above the jersey cards.  I was down to the last two packs in the final box and got this:

BOOM.  Nolan Ryan.  Couldn't have asked for a better player choice to hit on this one.  These aren't numbered or anything, so I don't think it will be worth the price of the box, but hey, I'm happy with it.  Nice little capper for the break.

And I did get a whole set of Series 2, so the only wants I have are for 1-270.  They are:

19  20  37  44  52  65  73  79  86  94  107  115  128  131  135  136  152  156  157  170  173  188  194  201  207  211  216  218  222  229  235  239  244  250  257  260  263

The extra inserts are available, especially for others like them, and the jerseys are too, except for Mussina.  Always open to Orioles and Nationals or my player collection guys.

Don't Know How They Do It...

Was just perusing the TCDB's listings for 2018 Topps so I could type out all the parallels I want for the two player collection cards I need out of the set.  I'm going for a full set in one shot at some point, so I'm trading for the couple singles in the meantime. (Any parallels will be a bonus.)

One of the singles I crossed off was the regular 1983 Bo Jackson.  So I listed the five parallels, blue, black, gold, red, (and greyed out the Platinum 1/1) on my wants site.

Then I remembered there are the Silver Pack '83s as well.  Luckily, those are only 50 cards compared to the 100 in the first series regular '83s.  Bo is not in them.  He'll probably show up there in one of the other series.  But I won't be heartbroken if he doesn't.

But that got me thinking.  What if I collected one of the top superstar guys that IS in both sets?  Then it would not only be five parallels (minus the 1/1), but there would be SEVEN MORE and an autograph, which is interchangeable with the 1/1.  So that's two cards, twelve parallels (-2), and an auto.

But wait, there's more!  How about the really top tier guys that are in most of the inserts?

I looked up Mike Trout's list for 2018 so far.  He's not only in both '83 inserts, but he's pretty much in every insert set in 2018 Topps.  And most of them have parallels this year!

He's got all this in just Topps flagship Series 1:

Regular card, eleven parallels, and four printing plates,
A short print variation, and a SSP variation,
1983 Tribute and five parallels,
Silver Pack '83, seven parallels, and an auto,
'83 autograph, and four parallels,
Home Run Challenge game card,
Legends In The Making, five parallels, and an auto,
Major League Material relic and four parallels,
Opening Day insert, five parallels, and an auto,
Spring Training Logo manupatch, four parallels, and an auto,
Player's Weekend manupatch, three parallels, and an auto,
Superstar Sensations and five parallels,
Reverence Auto Patch relic, and two parallels,
Salute card, five parallels, and an auto with two parallels.

So if you pull out the relics and autographs, (because who can really pull them?) and all the 1/1's (and anything less than 10), you're still left with 48 regular cards!  There are 22 "hits", and 18 1/1's or 1/5's.  A grand total of 88 cards for this one guy in this one flagship series.

And I know there are a lot of collectors that at least say they collect guys like Mike Trout.  Now whether they're Big Bank Hank who buys superfractors at auction for four digits, or just Charlie Collector, who hopes for the occasional jersey card and a few of the parallels, I don't know how they do it.  I'm not the first guy I mentioned by any means, but my player collections are usually more than just base and inserts.  The completist in me likes to find the oddballs and parallels as much as I can.  But I only do it for certain guys that have a finite number of cards issued and don't necessarily have the competition that the top tier superstars have.  I would get frustrated if I was up against a list like Trout's above and knew that there are a hundred guys also looking to fill it out at the same time, if not much quicker than I can.

Now I don't knock anybody for collecting who they want.  Makes perfect sense that a lot of people like the top superstar guys.  They are the ones that perform the best in key moments.  Providing the clutch hit, strikeout, or diving catch in the outfield is a regular occurence for guys like Trout, Jeter, Harper, Kershaw, Ortiz, A-Rod, Bryant, etc.  I wouldn't be too pressed to justify collecting my local hero guy Bryce Harper.  I watched his debut, his progression into the clutch star that he is, and his always honest and straightforward (though not always PC or polite) approach to the game on and off the field.  But since his rookies are rare and expensive aside from a couple plain base cards, I wouldn't think of doing a full PC of him.  There's just too much issued each year with his image on it.  And the big stuff goes for top dollar.  I've got a rare retro giveaway from the National, and one or two parallels of his in different sets, and that's about it.  I keep one page in a star binder that has some Harpers with cool pictures, or nice parallel designs, but that's as fancy as it gets.

I applaud those collectors who specialize in the top tier players, especially those who do more than just those guys alone.  I collect a lot of stuff, but I think most of my sets, team collections, [lesser] player collections, and oddball sports and non-sports cards are a lot easier to amass than a player like Harper or Trout.  Those collectors are on another level.  I wish 'em good luck!

Leading Ladies of Sports Broadcasting #2

Gavin over at BBC Breakdown inspired me to create a series of customs depicting pretty girls.  Keeping with the sports theme, I thought a series of cards featuring the most attractive women from the different sports channels would be cool.  I know I tune in sometimes just to see the host rather than for the highlights or discussion.

Here is the next in a series of nine (so far).  Last time I said Erin Andrews tops the alphabetical list.  Actually, that's not true.

Kay Adams is the host of NFL Network's Good Morning Football.  She also appears on NBC Sports Radio, SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, and Rotoworld web site.

This little fox is not only the adorable talk show host, but is quite the fantasy prognosticator.  I watched the Fantasy Football Live show last year, and among the eight to ten "experts" they had on there, she was by far the most accurate in predicting who to start and who to sit week to week.  She not only looks good, but is entertaining, fun, and knows what she's talking about!

She doesn't have a great volume of decent photos on the web, unfortunately.  Both of these are actually TV screen shots.  There are a couple pics of her dressed up at events, but none that I thought worked well here.

Lots of on-air shots,

Old pics,

Or great shots, just bad compositions,
